Terry Fox, a renowned Canadian figure known for his 1980 cross-country run to raise cancer research awareness and funds, is the subject of a new documentary, “Run Terry Run,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Directed by Sean Menard, the film features 96 previously unreleased reels of footage that showcase Fox’s personality, determination, and challenges.

Menard, inspired by the scarcity of quality footage on Fox’s marathon, discovered the unseen reels in a Toronto storage unit with the help of the Terry Fox Foundation. He meticulously restored the film to 4K resolution to create the documentary.

The documentary unveils several insights into Terry Fox’s journey. Despite not reaching his intended destination from St. John’s to Victoria, covering 5,373 kilometers in Ontario before halting near Thunder Bay due to cancer spreading, Fox’s detours to engage with supporters turned the Marathon of Hope into a national movement.

The film reveals the dynamics between Fox, his best friend Doug Alward, and his brother Darrell Fox, who joined the journey to mend tensions. It also portrays Terry’s frustration with media coverage and his insistence on fundraising solely for cancer research.

Additionally, the documentary delves into Terry Fox’s belief that a car accident triggered his cancer, his inspiration from young cancer patients, and his complex relationship with his prosthetic leg during the marathon.

“Run Terry Run” sheds light on Fox’s challenges in Quebec and Ontario, his moments of levity amidst the seriousness of his mission, and the poignant end of his journey in Thunder Bay. Terry Fox’s legacy lives on through the annual Terry Fox runs, having raised over $1 billion for cancer research worldwide.

The documentary aims to showcase Terry Fox’s ordinary beginnings and extraordinary accomplishments, inspiring viewers to follow his example. “Run Terry Run” is set to hit theaters on October 9.
