The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is set to maintain its current ownership structure without any plans for sale or changes, as confirmed by Stan Kasten, a member of the league’s advisory board. Despite co-founder Mark Walter divesting parts of his sports portfolio amid federal investigations, the 12-team league’s governance remains stable.
Kasten emphasized that there will be no alterations to the ownership status of the PWHL, reaffirming a steadfast commitment to the league’s sustainability and long-term vision since its inception. Walter, a prominent Chicago billionaire, owns interests in various sports franchises such as the Los Angeles Dodgers, Lakers, Sparks, Chelsea, and Cadillac F1.
Reports have surfaced about federal probes into Walter’s businesses concerning potential tax fraud issues, leading to the sale of the Los Angeles Lakers to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger for a groundbreaking $12.5 billion. The NBA’s approval for this sale is pending. While inquiries continue, the PWHL, with subsidiaries in Toronto and Vancouver, remains under scrutiny by securities commissions.
In 2022, Walter and his wife Kimbra founded the PWHL, collaborating with Kilmer Sports Ventures and Ilitch Sports and Entertainment as the league’s first external investors. The PWHL, inaugurated in 2024 and expanded in subsequent seasons, introduced the Walter Cup as its championship trophy. Recent developments include the league’s expansion to Hamilton, Detroit, San Jose, and Las Vegas, showcasing a vibrant future for women’s hockey.
Kasten expressed enthusiasm for the league’s growth, highlighting the pride of ownership and the remarkable progress achieved in a short period. Amid speculations, Kasten clarified that the Los Angeles Dodgers, a prized asset under Walter’s ownership, are not up for sale and remain focused on achieving success on the field. Walter’s significant stake in the Dodgers was acquired in 2012 through Guggenheim Baseball Management’s acquisition, financed partly by insurance company funds, solidifying his ties to the reigning World Series champions.
