Europe’s top auto companies, Stellantis and Volkswagen, showcased their confidence in electric vehicles at this year’s Paris auto show, drawing inspiration from Chinese rivals and partners who are transforming their local market landscape. Both firms are revamping their strategies to tackle the increasing competition from Chinese counterparts in Europe. Stellantis, which encompasses brands like Citroen, Peugeot, Opel, and Fiat in Europe, is leveraging partnerships with Leapmotor and Dongfeng to understand Chinese technological advancements better, as shared by Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa.
Filosa emphasized the potential for collaboration between Stellantis and Chinese partners to enhance capabilities and competitiveness. Notably, Stellantis has formed partnerships with Leapmotor and plans to collaborate with Dongfeng, aligning with the company’s shift towards meeting “Made in Europe” regulations.
The transition to electric vehicles in Europe has gained momentum, driven by factors such as soaring fuel prices and the availability of more affordable models from Stellantis and Volkswagen’s mainstream brands. These automakers are striving to safeguard their market shares against fast-expanding Chinese rivals venturing into international markets due to a slowdown in their domestic industry.
Stellantis’ collaboration with Leapmotor includes the development of a mid-sized electric SUV in conjunction with Opel, showcasing swift progress in product development. Meanwhile, Volkswagen’s transformation has been influenced by China, with CEO Oliver Blume describing it as a pivotal industry hub. Although Volkswagen’s collaboration with Xpeng primarily targets the Chinese market, potential partnerships in Europe remain in the discussion phase.
The industry experts suggest that European automakers must acknowledge China’s evolving role as a source of learning and innovation, marking a shift in the traditional learning dynamics between the two regions. While Volkswagen emphasizes partnerships in China, Stellantis’ successful alliance with Leapmotor exemplifies a fruitful collaboration in the European market. The industry dynamics indicate a paradigm shift where Chinese expertise is now shaping the future of the global automotive industry.
