Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse secured his fifth trip to the Diamond League Final despite finishing behind American Kenny Bednarek and South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile in the 200-meter race at the Weltklasse Zürich meet. De Grasse, the 2023 Diamond League champion, clocked in at 20.03 seconds, slightly slower than his previous performances this season.
This race marked De Grasse’s return to the 200-meter event since his victory at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet in Zagreb on June 26, where he finished in 19.95 seconds. His notable performances in earlier races included a win in 19.84 seconds at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix and a fifth-place finish in Morocco’s Rabat Diamond League.
De Grasse, who holds the Canadian record of 19.62 seconds set during the 2021 Olympic final in Tokyo, made history by becoming Canada’s first Diamond League Trophy recipient since Dylan Armstrong in shot put. The upcoming Final in Belgium will showcase top sprinters like Dambile, Letsile Tebogo, Bednarek, and other qualified athletes in a highly anticipated race.
The Diamond League meet in Zürich also witnessed record-breaking performances in the hurdles event by Alison dos Santos and Masai Russell, setting new world records in the men’s 400m hurdles and women’s 100m hurdles, respectively. Dos Santos clocked an incredible 45.80 seconds, while Russell achieved a time of 12.09 seconds, surpassing previous records.
Additionally, the pole vault event saw a thrilling competition between Mondo Duplantis and Emmanouil Karalis, with Karalis challenging Duplantis’ dominance by attempting to break the world record. The pair’s intense rivalry is set to continue at the upcoming Diamond League Final and World Athletics Ultimate Championships, promising an exciting showdown in the pole vault event.
