An acclaimed bed and breakfast establishment with an attached café has shut down, dealing a significant blow to the local community. The owner attributed the closure to the challenging location, which led to a lack of foot traffic.
The Dove Inn, known for its gluten-free offerings, located in Alburgh, Norfolk, ceased operations on Friday after running for two and a half years. The owner, Sonya Resemblance, expressed gratitude for the support received from what she referred to as “beautiful people.”
This closure adds to the mounting challenges faced by pubs and hospitality businesses across Britain. The sector has been grappling with closures due to escalating costs and evolving consumer preferences, creating strains within the industry.
In a similar vein, the esteemed White Horse establishment on London End in Beaconsfield recently shut down permanently. Pub owners had previously raised concerns about the industry’s viability, citing exorbitant cost increases. The closure of 300 pubs in the initial quarter of 2025 underscored the sector’s struggles.
Despite being recognized as one of the top 50 cafes in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before closing, the Dove Inn could not sustain its operations. Sonya Resemblance, who took over the business in July 2023, offered a variety of meals, including brunch, lunch, and popular Sunday roasts, while also focusing on creating employment opportunities, training programs, and mental health support initiatives.
The establishment received accolades, winning two Norfolk awards at Luxlife Magazine’s Food and Drink Awards, including Emerging Hospitality Business of the Year and B&B and Pub of the Year. Notably, all items on the menu were gluten-free, a feature that Sonya took pride in for catering to individuals with dietary restrictions.
In an announcement regarding the closure, Sonya expressed gratitude to patrons for their support and shared her appreciation for the opportunity to serve the community. She highlighted the jobs created, training provided, and the importance of social spaces for mental well-being that the business had facilitated.
Despite efforts to sustain the business amidst the prevailing challenges in the retail and hospitality sectors, the closure became inevitable. Sonya acknowledged the difficulty of the location as a primary factor contributing to the decision.
The news of the closure, confirmed by Sonya on January 16, received an outpouring of supportive messages from loyal customers. The community expressed sadness over the loss of a beloved meeting place and praised the quality of the food provided by the Dove Inn.
