A heartless babysitter who caused the death of a toddler by throwing him against a wall has been sentenced to life in prison.

Kimora Hodges inflicted severe head injuries on 22-month-old Kyrie Starks by repeatedly hitting him over several hours, resulting in a seizure. Hodges falsely claimed the seizure was due to the child ingesting soap.

Following Kyrie’s death one week after sustaining the injuries, Hodges, 24, was charged with first-degree child abuse and felony murder. After a six-day trial, a jury in Michigan, US, found her guilty.

Hodges had been caring for Kyrie intermittently for his 18-year-old neighbor, Taylor Starks, but turned violent during a session in June 2022. Despite emergency surgery, Kyrie could not be saved, and police discovered that Hodges had caused a severe blunt trauma injury to his head.

During questioning, Hodges eventually requested a lawyer after about two hours. Despite this, Detective Sergeant Menas Houstoulakis continued to question her and obtained admissions from Hodges.

The Court of Appeals ruled that a significant portion of Hodges’ statement, obtained after her request for a lawyer, was inadmissible in court. Hodges was subsequently sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment for murder and an additional 15 to 40 years for first-degree child abuse.

During the court proceedings, Taylor Starks expressed forgiveness towards Hodges but also emphasized the lack of accountability and love shown by the defendant towards her and her son. Starks stated that despite trying to find peace and forgiveness, it was challenging to reconcile the events that transpired.
