A British woman lost her best friend to methanol poisoning overseas after consuming bootleg alcohol, highlighting the urgent need for more preventive measures against such incidents.

Recently, the UK Foreign Office expanded the list of countries at risk of methanol poisoning due to the presence of counterfeit or contaminated alcoholic beverages. The updated list now includes Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda following reported cases of methanol-related illnesses. Methanol is often added to drinks like cocktails and spirits to increase quantity and reduce costs, leading to severe health consequences.

Symptoms of methanol poisoning range from nausea and dizziness to more alarming signs like vision impairment, which can manifest within 12 to 48 hours post-consumption.

Bethany Clarke, a 28-year-old from London, shared her tragic experience of traveling through Southeast Asia with her friend Simone White, 28, where they unknowingly ingested methanol-laced shots. The consequences were fatal for Simone, prompting Bethany to emphasize the necessity for increased awareness and preventive actions.

Expressing disappointment over the expanding list of countries affected, Bethany stressed the importance of immediate and extensive efforts to educate the public on the risks associated with tainted alcohol. She urged the UK government to take more proactive measures to prevent further tragedies.

Bethany, who now resides in Brisbane, Australia, emphasized the need for stringent precautions, advising people to stick to sealed beverages they open themselves to minimize the risk of methanol poisoning. She recounted the events leading to Simone’s death, underscoring the deceptive nature of the initial symptoms and the importance of recognizing the signs early on.

Bethany’s advocacy for change stems from her personal loss, driving her to raise awareness and push for enhanced safety measures to combat the prevalence of methanol-related incidents worldwide. She emphasized the critical role of education and vigilance in preventing further casualties, urging individuals to prioritize their safety by opting for canned drinks and avoiding questionable alcohol sources.
