Minutes before our arrival at RAF Akrotiri, a sudden air-raid alarm sounded, prompting thousands of British troops to seek shelter. This was the second alert within hours as tensions escalated amid the Iran crisis. Shortly after, a third air-raid siren forced everyone to take cover once again.

The wailing sound of WWII-style sirens signaling a “take cover” order led troops to don helmets and seek refuge in bunkers or on the ground. Defense Secretary John Healey had to take cover for the second time that day from potential missile or drone threats.

The base was well-prepared for such alarms, with six F-35B UK fighter jets and eight Typhoon warplanes on standby to defend against potential attacks. These aircraft could swiftly respond to threats, engaging and neutralizing incoming missiles or drones.

The F-35B, a deadly STOVL warplane, boasts advanced weaponry, including a 25mm cannon and precision missiles like the AIM-120 AMRAAM and Meteor air-to-air missiles. The RAF Akrotiri base, hosting 4,000 British forces and foreign troops, is strategically positioned near the Iran conflict.

Recent events have heightened security measures, with additional Typhoon fighter jets, Wildcat Helicopters, and the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon en route to reinforce defenses. A recent drone incident highlighted the vulnerability of the base, emphasizing the need for vigilance against potential threats.

The base’s significance has drawn the attention of terror groups and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, posing a constant threat to UK forces stationed there. British forces remain on high alert, ready to respond to any potential attacks and hoping for improved coordination among allied forces in the region.

Despite the tense atmosphere, professionalism prevails at RAF Akrotiri, where families of troops have been evacuated for safety. The frontline crews of RAF Typhoon and F35B fighter jets stand ready to defend against any hostile actions, showcasing their commitment to protecting the base and its personnel.
