Conor McGregor has officially announced that he will not participate in the UFC’s upcoming event at the White House.
Initially rumored to headline the fight against Michael Chandler on President Donald Trump’s front lawn on June 14, McGregor is now set to make his return to the octagon in July. UFC CEO Dana White will reveal the details of the White House card on Saturday, but McGregor’s name is expected to be missing, with his comeback now scheduled for July 11.
In an interview with Smash Cast, McGregor shared, “I was under the impression it was the White House. I was up for it. I know the administration was keen on having me there. It was supposed to be McGregor versus Chandler. Chandler is a respected fighter, known for his style and energy in the cage. I bring my own flair to the fight. It would have been an explosive matchup. They mentioned the possibility of saving me for the International Fight Week.”
McGregor also mentioned his willingness to fight Chandler, stating, “I have been preparing for him for the last two years. It feels strange; he deserves the opportunity, and it would have been a thrilling fight. However, circumstances changed, and I am eager to return. So, I apologize to Chandler, but things happen as they do.”
Confirming his return to the cage at welterweight, McGregor stated, “I will fight at 170 pounds. I have gained size and strength. I have been offered matchups, and I have accepted eagerly. I am waiting for the contract confirmation, and my manager is currently in discussions. I hope to receive a fair offer soon.”
The White House event might now feature Jon Jones making his comeback, potentially facing former middleweight and light-heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, who recently relinquished his 205-pound title.
