Brian David Steckel, a convicted rapist and murderer, displayed surprising coherence and clarity even after receiving a lethal injection.
Despite being administered a lethal drug cocktail following his conviction for the brutal rape and murder of Sandra Lee Long, 29, Steckel managed to converse calmly with family and witnesses in his final moments.
Witnesses at the execution noted audible clicks from the injection machine and observed convulsions, indicating a potential failure of the intended drug effects.
Officials in Delaware, however, asserted that the execution proceeded normally, clarifying that the extended duration was solely to allow Steckel to deliver his final statements.
In his parting words, Steckel expressed remorse and readiness for his fate, stating, “I accept my punishment without resistance. It is time for me to depart. I hold affection for all of you… I am at peace.”
Steckel’s conviction stemmed from the 1994 heinous rape and murder of Sandra Lee Long in Wilmington, Delaware.
In a gruesome turn of events, Steckel enticed Long into her own apartment under false pretenses, and upon her rejection of his advances, he violently assaulted her, attempting to strangle her with pantyhose and a sock.
After the assault, Steckel proceeded to set Long and the apartment’s curtains ablaze, leading to her death from smoke inhalation and severe burns covering a significant portion of her body.
Following the brutal act, Steckel continued his disturbing behavior by taunting authorities as the self-proclaimed “Driftwood Killer,” making threatening calls to a potential victim and local media outlets.
Subsequently apprehended while intoxicated on an outstanding harassment charge, Steckel confessed to his crime the following day.
At his trial, Steckel received multiple first-degree murder convictions and a death sentence. During the trial’s penalty phase, he acknowledged his wrongdoing, stating, “Hold me accountable for my actions… I recognize the selfish and despicable nature of my deeds.”
