A grandmother known for her tireless efforts in rescuing injured deer tragically lost her life in a fatal incident involving one of the animals she had cared for at her residence in Stewartsville, Ohio. Jodi Proger, 64, had dedicated over a decade to rehabilitating whitetail deer on her five-acre property located around 130 miles east of Columbus. However, on November 15, she was fatally injured by a buck after being confined with the animal in an enclosure.

Law enforcement authorities in Belmont County had to intervene and fatally shoot the aggressive deer to reach Proger, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The specific details of her injuries have not been disclosed to the public.

Proger’s involvement in deer rescue began in 2013 when she rescued a fawn left orphaned after its mother was hit by a car. She named the fawn Wheezer and faced challenges in retaining custody of him when state officials threatened to seize him. Despite the obstacles, Proger continued her efforts in rescuing and caring for deer, expanding her sanctuary to accommodate more animals.

Following Wheezer’s arrival, Proger provided refuge to several other deer on her property, which she frequently shared on social media, showcasing her bond with the animals. Despite the tragic incident, Proger’s daughter Jennifer Bryan clarified that Wheezer was not involved in her mother’s death and emphasized that Proger was well aware of the risks associated with caring for deer.

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Proger’s death, with both the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Ohio Department of Agriculture involved in the inquiries. The family has requested privacy and respect during this difficult time as they mourn the loss of their loved one.
