With their 11-year-old child preparing for secondary school in September, Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to provide him with a mobile phone. Prior to this, the couple understood the importance of communicating with each other and their son.

Giovanna, aged 40, emphasized the need to carefully manage and ensure the safety of children’s access to technology. She expressed concerns about the prevalence of inappropriate content and mental health issues among children, highlighting the importance of empowering parents to engage in conversations with their children.

As many families have gifted smartphones to children during the holiday season, they are now navigating the challenges and benefits associated with this technology. In the upcoming year, a campaign called “The Family Chat” in collaboration with Tesco Mobile is aimed at encouraging families to discuss online device usage with their children at any developmental stage.

Giovanna expressed her enthusiasm for this campaign, noting that it provides valuable knowledge gaps for her family. She emphasized that parents often feel pressure to have all the answers but highlighted the resources and online tools offered by Tesco Mobile as a valuable support system.

The Fletchers, who have two other sons aged seven and nine, have provided their children with tablets for communication purposes, gaming, and video calls. They implemented strict settings on their eldest son’s smartphone to limit its functionalities and ensure parental supervision.

Giovanna stressed the importance of maintaining open communication with their children and setting clear boundaries on device usage. She acknowledged the risks of excessive screen time for both children and adults and emphasized the gradual introduction of internet access to children.

Additionally, the article provides tips for parents to enhance online safety for their children, such as setting up child accounts, ensuring correct age settings, activating safety filters, utilizing parental controls, and maintaining ongoing conversations about online safety and smartphone usage.

Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasized the significance of prioritizing the safe setup of new devices to protect children from online harm amidst the excitement and potential risks associated with using technology.
