Scrolling through Instagram reveals a recurring theme – luxurious beach clubs, stunning sunsets against skyscrapers, and lavish scenes beneath the Dubai skyline. Dubai appears as a glamorous haven to many influencers and social media enthusiasts, portraying a realm where rules are bendable until they aren’t.

In recent years, a significant portion of the British influencer community seems to be relocating to the United Arab Emirates, drawn by the prospect of tax-free earnings and the perceived safety they flaunt online.

Despite being deemed safe by some, Dubai is a place of potential risk for others. The UAE, including Dubai, follows a legal system combining civil and Islamic laws. While these laws aim to maintain societal order, they can come across as exceedingly stringent to Western visitors.

Public decency regulations dictate strict guidelines, frowning upon displays of affection in public spaces. Merely kissing a partner in public could lead to imprisonment. Moreover, behaviors such as swearing or making rude gestures are illegal, and visitors are expected to adhere to Islamic dress codes, requiring women to cover their shoulders and knees, with ‘cross dressing’ prohibited.

The UAE authorities also monitor social media activities to ensure compliance with government critique restrictions, contrasting the freedom of speech enjoyed in the UK. The country maintains a zero-tolerance stance on drug-related offenses, as evidenced by former Love Island star Kaz Crossley’s detainment in Dubai following a video allegedly showing drug consumption.

During her detainment, Kaz shared a distressing account, recounting a fellow detainee’s plight, a woman imprisoned for extramarital pregnancy, describing the dire conditions in the jail. Despite the ordeal, Kaz highlighted a concerning lack of basic necessities and hygiene provisions.

In light of ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, former Apprentice star Luisa Zissman expressed a belief in Dubai’s safety compared to the UK, overlooking missile threats targeting the region. However, some influencers, like Kady McDermott, have faced criticism for flaunting their leisurely activities during the turmoil, drawing ire from individuals like Montana Brown, who chastised them for their insensitivity.

The escalating Middle East conflict, post-Iran incident, continues to disrupt travel, with numerous flights to and from Dubai either canceled or delayed, leaving many tourists stranded. Despite Dubai’s relatively lower crime rates, the city imposes strict lifestyle restrictions, contrasting the liberties typically taken for granted in the UK.

Notably, the allure of Dubai’s opulent lifestyle, exemplified by ‘Porta Potty Parties,’ may mask the stringent societal norms and potential risks inherent in the city’s legal framework.
