A bicyclist who got injured in a collision with a drunk driver is the first person to receive a 3D-printed face from a pioneering NHS facility specializing in body parts printing.

Dave Richards, aged 75, narrowly survived the tragic accident that left him with injuries to his back, pelvis, and multiple ribs on one side of his body. He also sustained severe burns to one side of his face, including his eye, nose, and part of his neck.

Following the incident, Richards sought assistance from Reconstructive Prosthetics, which operates The Bristol 3D Medical Centre, a unique facility in the UK offering comprehensive 3D scanning, design, and printing services within the NHS.

Located in Frenchay, Bristol, the center delivers cutting-edge scientific and technical support to trauma patients through advanced digital technology and specialized reconstructive expertise. Richards, a resident of Devon, availed himself of the center’s services post-accident. As part of his treatment, he received a customized 3D prosthesis matching his hair color, eye color, and skin tone.

Expressing his experience, Richards mentioned that due to infection risks, his eye had to be removed, and he underwent a successful surgery involving a free flap procedure to cover the affected area on his face. Subsequent surgeries were required to address scar tissue tightness.

Richards reflected on feeling vulnerable during his initial recovery phase, but expressed gratitude for the transformative impact of the 3D technology offered at the center, which helped boost his confidence and aid in his rehabilitation.

The incident occurred on July 21, 2021, when Richards and his companions were struck by a speeding inebriated driver while cycling in Mere, near the A303. Despite initial skepticism, Richards embraced the prosthetic treatment, receiving additional aids such as an orbital prosthesis and neck scar splints for scar tissue management.

Continuing his journey to recovery, Richards gradually resumed indoor cycling activities and aims to regain his outdoor cycling confidence. The driver responsible for the accident was convicted to three years in prison and a seven-year driving ban, although he was released early due to good behavior and a guilty plea.

Richards expressed disappointment over the reduced sentence, emphasizing the enduring pain and near-fatal consequences of the accident on his daily life.
