The Foreign Secretary emphasized the critical need for continued attention on Gaza, stating that it cannot be abandoned as a zone caught between peace and conflict. Yvette Cooper called on Israel and Hamas to uphold the current ceasefire, which has been strained by recent violent incidents, including Israeli airstrikes resulting in over 100 casualties in Gaza. Allegations from Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration claim Hamas was responsible for attacking Israeli soldiers, escalating tensions over the return of deceased Israeli captives.

During her inaugural visit to the Middle East as Foreign Secretary, Ms. Cooper urged Israel to permit more aid into the war-torn Gaza Strip. She stressed the urgency for global leaders to advance the peace plan initiated earlier by Donald Trump, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey.

Addressing the Manama Dialogue security summit in Bahrain, she underlined the necessity of continuous efforts to prevent Gaza from stagnating in a state of uncertainty between peace and conflict. Ms. Cooper called for the removal of aid restrictions, emphasizing the importance of swift delivery of essential assistance to Gaza.

The UK has committed £4 million to clear landmines from Gaza, aiming to eliminate obstacles hindering aid access to the distressed population. Ms. Cooper highlighted the necessity of demining efforts to ensure the safety and reconstruction of Gaza.

Furthermore, the Foreign Secretary extended a formal invitation to Palestine to establish diplomatic ties with the United Kingdom, following the UK’s recent recognition of a Palestinian state. However, challenges lie ahead in the next phase of the peace process, including disarming Hamas, establishing a new government, and implementing peacekeeping measures for sustainable security in the region.

Ms. Cooper stressed the fragility of the ceasefire and the critical need for progress to secure the lives and future of both Israeli and Palestinian populations. She advocated for foreign journalists to be granted access to Gaza to reveal the extent of devastation and emphasized the importance of investing in rebuilding Gaza for the Palestinian people.

Even in times of peace, Ms. Cooper highlighted the lasting impact of conflict on children, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding and supporting the most vulnerable victims.
