Former England and Manchester United goalkeeper Mary Earps has revealed that she objected to the rewarding of ‘bad behavior’ when fellow goalkeeper Hannah Hampton was brought back into the England squad. In her recently released autobiography ‘All In,’ exclusively published by The Guardian, Earps highlighted Hampton’s disruptive behavior during England’s Euro 2022 victory, which often posed challenges during training sessions and strained team dynamics.

Earps, without delving into specifics, mentioned that Hampton’s conduct had led to her exclusion from England squads in October 2022 due to reported issues at team camps. Despite being consulted by manager Sarina Wiegman prior to Hampton’s return to the squad in 2023, Earps expressed her concerns about the decision, questioning the rewarding of negative behavior.

Following the reports about her behavior, Hampton admitted to contemplating quitting football due to the impact it had on her. However, with the support of her family and friends, she found the strength to overcome the challenges and continue playing. Hampton’s eventual resurgence saw her become Wiegman’s primary choice goalkeeper, a development that led Earps to retire from international football before the Euros in Switzerland.

In her forthcoming biography, Earps reflects on her experiences as a young player, including criticism from coaches and the struggles she faced during lockdown, where she admitted to unhealthy eating habits and excessive drinking. The book is set to be released next week, offering insights into Earps’ journey and the hurdles she overcame in her career.
