Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has commenced serving a five-year prison term following his conviction for accepting millions of euros from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to finance his 2007 election campaign.

The 70-year-old, who governed France from 2007 to 2012, is now confined in a compact cell at La Santé prison in Paris. La Santé, a 19th-century facility with a grim past, has accommodated notorious criminals and witnessed guillotine executions until as late as 1972. Notably, Jean-Luc Brunel, an associate of Jeffrey Epstein, was also held there before his demise in 2022 while facing sex-trafficking allegations.

Despite being designed for 657 inmates, La Santé currently houses 1,243 prisoners, reflecting France’s significant prison overcrowding issue, ranking only behind Slovenia and Cyprus in Europe, according to the Council of Europe.

Sarkozy is reportedly placed in a solitary cell within the isolation wing for his safety, where inmates spend most of their time in seclusion, with limited outdoor access and restricted communication among themselves. The cell is equipped with essential amenities like a toilet, shower, desk, electric hob, and a TV for a monthly fee, along with options for a small fridge.

Former La Santé deputy head Flavie Rault described the harsh conditions in the isolation wing, highlighting the social isolation and minimal contact with other detainees. To ensure his safety, two police officers are stationed nearby to protect Sarkozy due to potential threats against him.

Amidst ongoing protests of innocence, Sarkozy is detained in the so-called “VIP” wing on the top floor, alongside other high-profile and vulnerable inmates, despite assertions from his lawyer that he is not receiving preferential treatment.

Following his initial night in prison, Sarkozy’s wife, Carla Bruni, expressed concerns about his well-being, stating that his family members will be permitted three weekly visits. Sarkozy has expressed plans to read and write during his incarceration, including bringing three books, such as The Count of Monte Cristo, and contemplating a book about his prison experience.

In a separate case, Sarkozy was found guilty of criminal conspiracy involving the alleged transfer of up to €50 million from Libya to fund his campaign between 2005 and 2007, charges he vehemently denies. His legal team has lodged an appeal, pending a decision on his conviction within two months by the judiciary.
