An individual involved in fraudulent activities managed to escape from prison due to a mix-up in his sentence which was mistakenly linked to another person sharing the same surname. William Smith, also known as Billy, received a 45-month sentence for various fraud offenses at Croydon Crown Court but was erroneously released because of the incorrect information entered into the system. Authorities are now in pursuit of him to bring him back into custody.

During his court appearance, he was accompanied by a co-defendant named Joseph Smith, with court records indicating their joint sentencing. While William was incarcerated at HMP Wandsworth and attended via video link, his co-defendant, who was out on bail and physically present in court, received a suspended sentence, allowing him to go free.

The mix-up occurred when the sentences were wrongly input into the digital system, resulting in William being mistakenly granted a suspended sentence. Efforts were made to rectify the error earlier on the same day, but another mistake in the notification process led to William being released prematurely before the correction could be implemented.

Surrey Police issued an appeal to locate Billy Smith, aged 35, who was erroneously released. Described as last seen wearing specific clothing, he has ties to Woking but could be anywhere within Surrey, according to authorities. This incident follows the inadvertent release of Brahim Kaddour Cherif, an Algerian national, from HMP Wandsworth, prompting an urgent search for him.
