Lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes may have impressive lifespans exceeding 400 years, as recent research reveals. Despite their longevity, these large, armored fish are endangered in the Great Lakes and Ontario, with their population drastically reduced due to overfishing and habitat destruction.
The study, led by Ed Baker of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, challenges previous estimates by analyzing 44 years of capture data. By tracking individual sturgeon growth rates, researchers found instances where sturgeon took centuries to reach full size.
This discovery poses significant implications for conservation efforts, especially for Trevor Pitcher, a biologist at the University of Windsor. He emphasizes the need to rethink conservation strategies given the potential multi-century lifespan of sturgeon.
Pitcher’s work extends to collaborating with indigenous communities to raise sturgeon populations, recognizing the important role sturgeon play in the ecosystem. Perry McLeod-Shabogesic, an elder from Nipissing First Nation, highlights the spiritual significance of sturgeon as revered elders in Anishinaabe tradition.
McLeod-Shabogesic views sturgeon as beings that exist “in between,” embodying a unique space in the natural world. He emphasizes the cultural and historical importance of sturgeon, reflecting on their enduring presence in indigenous teachings.
