Labour’s new deputy leader, Lucy Powell, has emphasized the importance of honoring the party’s manifesto pledges on taxation. Powell, a former Cabinet minister, stressed the need for Keir Starmer’s government to uphold the commitments made prior to Labour’s significant election win.

The call for adherence to the manifesto comes in the wake of Chancellor Rachel Reeves hinting at potential tax increases in a pre-Budget speech. Despite the Chancellor’s reluctance to reiterate Labour’s vow not to raise taxes on working individuals, Powell insisted on maintaining the manifesto promises in light of the challenging economic circumstances.

Powell underscored the significance of political trust, stating that it is crucial for the government to earn the public’s confidence to lead effectively. She highlighted the objective of ensuring that ordinary working people benefit from Labour’s governance by putting more money back into their pockets, aligning with the core principles of the party’s manifesto.

Additionally, Powell advocated for the complete removal of the two-child benefit limit, echoing a similar sentiment expressed by former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. She emphasized the urgency of addressing the policy to prevent further escalation of child poverty levels.

Powell’s election as deputy leader, triumphing over Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, was based on a platform calling for a strategic shift within the party. The focus remains on delivering on manifesto commitments and advocating for policies that positively impact working-class citizens.
