Lindsey Vonn, a renowned figure in American skiing, experienced a significant crash during the downhill competition at the Winter Olympics. The 41-year-old athlete, a representative of Team USA, courageously participated despite suffering an ACL rupture prior to the Milan Cortina Games.

Having been a former gold medalist, Vonn had high expectations for victory in the event before her injury. Although she retired from skiing in 2019, a partial knee replacement in 2024 set the stage for her remarkable return.

Despite a crash in late January shaking her Olympic aspirations, Vonn remained resolute in her decision to compete and completed her required training runs earlier in the week. However, her hopes for a triumphant comeback were shattered as she lay motionless on the slopes during the women’s downhill skiing final, eventually requiring airlifting to a hospital. The incident elicited an emotional response from the BBC’s broadcast team.

Commentator Chemmy Alcott expressed deep emotions, stating, “I actually feel guilty that I am this emotional… we never believed that it would end in her in a clump at the side of the piece, not moving.” Alcott highlighted the challenges Vonn faced due to her previous knee injury and the intense competition pressure.

The commentator further emphasized the high risks involved in Vonn’s attempt to conquer the downhill course, acknowledging the collective hope for her recovery amidst the tense atmosphere. The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games are ongoing, offering fans over 850 hours of live action on discovery+ via Prime Video.

Throughout the Games, a £3.99 discovery+ Entertainment subscription grants access to TNT Sports 2, providing round-the-clock Olympic coverage. Viewers are encouraged to select the Daily Mirror as a ‘Preferred Source’ on Google News for convenient access to preferred news content.
