Manchester United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, faced competition from other candidates to succeed Erik ten Hag in 2024. The club considered options like Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi before eventually appointing Amorim. Ten Hag’s job security was in question towards the end of the 2023/24 season due to poor results, but he received a reprieve after winning the FA Cup.
When Ten Hag was eventually dismissed in October the following year, both De Zerbi and Tuchel had already taken on new roles elsewhere. De Zerbi joined Marseille after leaving Brighton, while Tuchel agreed to lead England’s national team starting in January 2025.
Reports suggest that United continued to weigh Tuchel as a potential candidate even after their cup victory. However, discussions with Tuchel in Monaco did not lead to an agreement as he was not ready to return to coaching immediately after leaving Bayern Munich. Similarly, negotiations with De Zerbi stalled after he turned down an initial offer from United.
United backed Ten Hag in the transfer market with significant funds, but his tenure was short-lived, with poor performances leaving the team in 14th place. Amorim took over and guided the team to the Europa League final but fell short of securing a Champions League spot due to an eight-game winless streak, resulting in a 15th-place finish.
In his first full season, Amorim faced a slow start but has since steered the team to three consecutive wins, lifting them to sixth place in the league standings. Amorim emphasized the importance of staying true to his tactics and learning from pressure situations to strengthen his coaching philosophy.
