The ex-chief of the Navy has expressed concerns that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine could escalate into a nuclear showdown. Admiral Lord West, former First Sea Lord, issued this serious warning, stating that Britain is essentially engaged in a conflict with Moscow.
He highlighted “grey zone warfare,” which involves hostile actions outside conventional armed confrontations, such as Russian interference with undersea cables and drone trespasses along Nato’s eastern border.
Lord West, speaking on the Lord Speaker’s podcast, remarked, “It’s challenging to envision a resolution to this conflict without risking a full-scale war between Nato and Russia. Russia would not emerge victorious from such a conflict. The worrisome question is whether they would resort to a nuclear option.”
Former Nato General Secretary Lord Robertson, who led a comprehensive review of the nation’s defense, emphasized that Britain is inadequately prepared for the evolving threats it faces. Experts have previously raised alarms about increasing Russian activities against the UK, including cyber attacks, espionage flights, arson attacks, and submarine intrusions.
Sir Ken McCallum, MI5’s director, recently stated that Russia is dedicated to causing chaos and devastation globally but is now relying on disposable proxies after its agents were expelled from European embassies.
Lord Robertson, in the podcast, stressed the vulnerability of the nation, stating, “We are ill-prepared, under-protected, under attack, and at risk. Despite appearances, we are under cyber assault. The recent surge in cyber disruptions cannot be mere coincidence.”
He also pointed out that the orchestration of sabotage across Europe has been attributed to the GRU, the Russian military intelligence agency. Putin’s ambitions extend beyond seizing territory in eastern Ukraine, causing concerns in neighboring countries like Moldova and Azerbaijan.
Supporting President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian government is crucial at this juncture to influence Vladimir Putin’s mindset. The aim is to convince him that victory is unattainable, as his current territorial gains are minimal.
