A man from the UK is facing a potential 20-year prison sentence following his conviction for the drug-induced killing of another man he had met for a weekend rendezvous. Aaron Rainbow, a helicopter pilot originally from Surrey, was found by a jury to have violently and deliberately murdered Oscar Tornero, 38, by stabbing him six times in various parts of his body after consuming crystal meth and GHB together.
During his trial, Rainbow claimed he had acted in self-defence due to feeling confused and paranoid from the drugs they had taken at Tornero’s residence in Vallgorguina, north of the Catalan capital. He expressed his belief that he was not fully accountable for the incident, stating that he feared being recorded and attacked by unknown individuals.
Witnesses testified that Rainbow armed himself with a knife out of fear and subsequently stabbed Tornero multiple times before the victim attempted to escape and succumbed to his injuries. The prosecution sought a 19-year prison term for Rainbow, which was later increased to 20 years following the jury’s decision.
Despite Rainbow’s defense attorney arguing for his client’s acquittal on grounds of temporary insanity and self-defence, the jury delivered a guilty verdict by an 8-1 majority. Rainbow’s sentencing will be determined at a later date as per Spanish legal procedures, taking into account the two years he has already spent in custody.
