A mother is advising parents to refrain from allowing others to kiss their young ones this holiday season after her child faced a life-threatening situation. Destiny Smith, aged 30, noticed her two-year-old daughter showing symptoms similar to a cold around this time last year. Despite this, her intuition alerted her to a more severe issue when she observed her child struggling to breathe, leading to an immediate trip to the hospital.

It was revealed that Destiny’s three-year-old daughter had contracted respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a prevalent respiratory illness, necessitating an urgent transfer to intensive care as her health rapidly deteriorated. After a challenging eight-day battle, the child eventually recovered completely.

Previously, the stay-at-home mother permitted friends and family to cuddle and kiss her children. However, she now exercises extreme caution and educates others about the serious risks associated with RSV.

Destiny, hailing from Lake County, Florida, USA, recounted, “She displayed cold symptoms, but we sensed this was different. Her breathing was unusual, so we rushed her to the hospital. Throughout the night, her condition worsened significantly.”

Following an incident in November 2024, close to Thanksgiving, Destiny’s daughter began exhibiting cold-like symptoms. Recognizing the severity of the situation, Destiny and her partner, Tristan, aged 27, quickly took their daughter to the hospital, where doctors advised an overnight stay and diagnosed her with RSV. This infection primarily affects infants and the elderly, potentially leading to severe complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia.

As the night progressed, the child’s health rapidly declined, prompting Destiny and her partner to vigilantly watch over her for the subsequent two days as she grew weaker. After two days, the child was airlifted to the pediatric ICU, spending five days there. Medical professionals administered breathing treatments at two-hour intervals, yet her oxygen levels continued to drop.

Describing the ordeal, Destiny expressed, “It was extremely frightening. The uncertainty of whether my child would survive the night was agonizing.”

Following a distressing week where Destiny and her partner had to contemplate their daughter’s funeral arrangements, the child began to show signs of recovery and was eventually discharged. She was prescribed an inhaler requiring administration every four hours for the ensuing three weeks and was referred to a specialist for further evaluation.

Destiny disclosed that friends and family had been interacting closely with her daughter before she contracted RSV. She emphasized the importance of caution when allowing non-immediate family members to touch young children to prevent similar incidents.

Since her daughter’s illness, Destiny’s perspective on physical contact with her children has drastically shifted. She emphasized the significance of raising awareness about the rapid progression of severe illnesses and advised other parents to trust their instincts and seek medical attention promptly if something seems amiss.
