Today, as I stand before the parliament, the ceremonial facade of my job dissipates. Reading out the names of women who have fallen victim to male violence in the past year lays bare the harsh reality women endure daily. It is a solemn duty that weighs heavily on me, symbolizing the failure of our society and institutions to safeguard women.

On this International Women’s Day, alongside 265 women MPs, I reflect on the remarkable achievements of women globally. However, I choose this day deliberately to acknowledge the harsh realities faced by many women worldwide, amidst the celebrations. Merely applauding ourselves on this day while women continue to face violence is performative, not progress.

This moment is not about me; it belongs to the women who have suffered and those who live under constant threat. It is a day of deep emotion, where tears are held back, and the burden of remembrance is profound. Despite the discomfort, I vow to continue honoring these women and fight for a safer world for women and girls in all spheres of life.

Our commitment extends beyond rhetoric; we are actively working to reduce violence against women by half in a decade. This effort is not just a policy; it is a crucial intervention to protect women and girls. Placing their safety at the core of our actions is the true tribute to these women, and I am resolute in ensuring the safety of women and girls across the country.
