In 1986, the Nintendo Entertainment System introduced gamers to the iconic title, “Castlevania,” known for its monster-fighting action, challenging gameplay, and catchy soundtrack. Over the past nearly 40 years, the series has expanded with numerous sequels, spinoffs, and cross-media adaptations. However, the franchise has been relatively dormant since the release of its last installment in 2014 by its publisher, Konami in Japan.

Now, a new game titled “Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse” seeks to attract both new and longtime fans by drawing inspiration from the diverse history of the series and independent games it has influenced. This fresh addition to the franchise offers a blend of classic 2D exploration and stunning artistic design, though its high level of difficulty may pose a challenge for newcomers to the genre.

Set in 1499, “Belmont’s Curse” follows the story of Rose Belmont, the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades from the 1989 game “Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse.” Rose finds herself in Paris, besieged by mysterious monsters while grappling with a curse inherited from her mother, which threatens to turn her into a mindless creature if she succumbs to hatred.

As players guide Rose through Paris and Dracula’s castle, reminiscent of the beloved “Symphony of the Night” from 1997, they will explore interconnected locations, uncovering new abilities and equipment to overcome obstacles. The game adopts the popular “Metroidvania” style, allowing for non-linear progression and backtracking to previously inaccessible areas.

While the game’s engaging combat mechanics and intricate level design pay homage to its predecessors, the heightened level of difficulty, especially in trap-filled rooms, may prove challenging. Players must rely on their skills to navigate through intense battles and avoid deadly traps, which can test their patience and precision.

Despite its demanding gameplay, “Belmont’s Curse” shines in its visual presentation and captivating soundtrack. The game features vibrant environments, from eerie catacombs to haunting castles, accompanied by a dynamic musical score that blends classical elements with modern beats. The voice acting performances further enhance the immersive experience, adding depth to the narrative.

Notably, the Nintendo Switch version of the game faced performance issues during the review period, including low-resolution graphics and input lag. However, these issues are expected to be addressed in a Day 1 update across all platforms, ensuring a smoother gaming experience for players.

“Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse” offers a nostalgic yet refreshing take on the beloved franchise, appealing to fans of the series and newcomers alike with its blend of classic gameplay and modern aesthetics.
