Joe Cullen recently took to social media to criticize Mensur Suljovic, accusing the experienced darts player of unfair play. Cullen faced a disappointing loss to Suljovic in a tight second-round match at the World Darts Championship.
Suljovic made a remarkable comeback after being behind by a set, ultimately securing a 3-1 win over Cullen at Alexandra Palace. Throughout the game, Cullen displayed impatience, frequently checking his watch and muttering “hurry up” to himself while the 53-year-old Suljovic took his time with throws at the oche.
Although Suljovic is known for his slower pace compared to other players, Cullen, also known as ‘the Rockstar,’ grew increasingly frustrated with his opponent’s deliberate speed and prolonged celebrations. Tensions escalated during their post-match handshake, with Cullen exchanging heated words with Suljovic, who responded with laughter.
As Cullen exited the stage, he paused, turned back, and gave Suljovic a cold stare as the Austrian basked in the crowd’s applause. Cullen did not hold back in his angry social media outburst, implying that Suljovic’s behavior was cheating and not in the spirit of the game.
When questioned about Cullen’s reaction and whether he apologized for his slow play during a press conference, Suljovic seemed puzzled. He stated that he never apologized to Cullen personally, emphasizing that players have different styles and preferences on stage.
Suljovic further addressed the issue, expressing confusion about Cullen’s grievances and defending his actions during the match. Despite the tension, Suljovic acknowledged Cullen as a nice person but hinted at unresolved differences.
Looking ahead, Suljovic may face off against defending world champion Luke Littler in the next round. Littler, an 18-year-old player, is set to compete against NHS area manager David Davies in his upcoming match.
The PDC World Darts Championship commenced on December 11, offering fans the opportunity to watch every match live exclusively through Sky’s Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle.
