A company in Saskatchewan is currently engaged in drilling operations aimed at extracting hydrogen from underground sources on a large-scale commercial basis, rather than relying on fossil fuel production methods. Earlier this month, Regina-based Max Power Mining initiated drilling for its third well at the Lawson Complex in southern Saskatchewan. The company envisions establishing the world’s first extensive commercial natural hydrogen system, presenting a new primary energy source.

Chad Levesque, the company’s president and director, emphasized the significance of hydrogen as a crucial element for various industrial processes, including ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning towards more environmentally sustainable energy sources. Natural hydrogen, extracted directly from underground deposits, is seen as a more ecologically friendly alternative to current production methods.

Hydrogen serves as a versatile gas that can be utilized as a fuel or in fuel cells for electricity generation, emitting only water as a byproduct and producing no direct greenhouse gases. The potential of hydrogen as an energy source for sectors such as transportation and steelmaking has been widely recognized. However, the majority of commercially available hydrogen is currently sourced from fossil fuels, resulting in substantial carbon emissions.

Green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis of water using renewable energy, offers a lower-emission alternative but remains costlier compared to conventional grey hydrogen. Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, offers the advantage of being naturally occurring and requiring less energy-intensive processes for extraction, potentially leading to reduced greenhouse gas emissions and more cost-effective pricing.

The underground formation at the Lawson Complex in Saskatchewan showcases evidence of natural hydrogen production through natural processes such as serpentinization and radioactive decay. While the discovery of natural hydrogen deposits has sparked global interest, challenges remain in extracting and commercializing these resources effectively.

Max Power Mining’s ongoing drilling activities aim to assess the quantity, location, and extraction feasibility of natural hydrogen at the Lawson Complex. The company plans to release data as it progresses with its investigations to determine the commercial viability of natural hydrogen extraction. Despite the promising potential of natural hydrogen, further research and development are required to evaluate its scalability and impact on decarbonization efforts.
