Major supermarkets offer their own versions of these beloved Easter sweets at a more affordable price point. I decided to sample Mini Eggs from Aldi, Lidl, M&S, and Asda, eager to compare them to the renowned brand.
For comparison purposes, I also purchased a pack of Cadbury’s Mini Eggs. Despite some variations in packet sizes among stores, I managed to gather similar-sized packs for comparison. Cadbury’s Mini Eggs, known for their delightful taste, are becoming scarce as Easter approaches, with prices typically around £2 for an 80g pack.
Among the supermarket alternatives, one brand stood out, surpassing even the original Mini Eggs. I was thoroughly impressed and plan to stock up on this particular brand before Easter arrives.
Starting with the original Cadbury Mini Eggs, the familiar taste did not disappoint. The delightful sugary scent upon opening the packet was inviting, and the crispy texture paired with the smooth chocolate center was simply divine. However, as the holiday nears, finding these iconic treats may become more challenging.
Moving on to Asda’s own-brand Mini Eggs, priced at £1.12 for an 80g pack, they offer a more budget-friendly option compared to Cadbury. Despite a lower price, the taste did not match up to the premium quality of the original, lacking the same sweet fragrance and smooth chocolate.
Next, I tried Mister Choc’s Mini Eggs, priced at £1.15 for an 80g pack. While the taste was acceptable after adjusting to the texture, it still fell short of the Cadbury standard, earning a lower rating.
Aldi and Lidl’s versions, though similar, did not impress in terms of taste. Choceur Mini Eggs from Aldi, priced at £3.39 for 256g, offered a mid-tier experience with slightly bland chocolate. While not terrible, they did not match the richness of Cadbury’s Mini Eggs.
M&S’s Mini Eggs surprised me with their large size and impressive chocolate-to-shell ratio. The filling melted in the mouth, providing an addictive experience that even surpassed the original Cadbury’s. Priced at £1.79 for a 90g pack, they offer a more affordable and satisfying alternative.
In conclusion, M&S’s Mini Eggs are a standout choice for those seeking a quality substitute for Cadbury’s. They receive a perfect five-star rating from me, and I look forward to exploring more of M&S’s Easter treats.
