Team GB is aiming for its most successful Winter Olympics at the upcoming Milano Cortina Games. UK Sport, the funding body for Olympic and Paralympic sports in the UK, projects between four to eight medals for the British team in northern Italy.

The best Winter Games performance by Britain was at Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018, where they secured five medals, including one gold. Team GB officials are now setting even higher expectations for the upcoming Games.

The optimism surrounding Team GB’s chances stems from the strong lineup heading to Italy, which includes world champions, X Games gold medallists, and athletes who have achieved podium finishes in World Cup events. The recent 2024/25 season saw British winter athletes claim nine World Championship medals in various disciplines.

British skiers and snowboarders have achieved remarkable success, with 28 major podium finishes in Olympic events, three Crystal Globes for overall World Cup titles, and Zoe Atkin’s World Championship crown. Eve Muirhead, who won a curling gold in 2022, praised the meticulous preparations and highlighted the potential within the team to challenge the status quo at the upcoming Olympics.

The top contenders for Team GB in various events include double men’s skeleton world champion Weston, who has dominated the World Cup circuit with multiple victories. Muir, a two-time World Cup gold medallist, and Brookes, the youngest ever snowboarding world champion, are also strong medal prospects for Team GB.

Atkin, the current halfpipe world champion, and Bankes, a two-time Crystal Globe winner, are also poised to make an impact in their respective events. The figure-skating duo of Fear and Gibson are aiming to secure Britain’s first Olympic figure-skating medal since 1994, adding to their impressive European and Grand Prix achievements.

Bruce Mouat’s British curling team, the reigning world champions, are expected to continue their success after claiming the 2022 silver medal. The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games will take place from February 6-22, with fans able to enjoy over 850 hours of live action on discovery+ via Prime Video.

Viewers can access 24/7 Olympic coverage through the £3.99 discovery+ Entertainment subscription during the Games. For quick access to valuable news, select Daily Mirror as a ‘Preferred Source’ on Google News.
