Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated an inquiry into the potential use of harmful chemicals in the production of children’s underwear by Fruit of the Loom and Hanes. Paxton has issued civil investigative demands to these companies, emphasizing concerns about the impact of these chemicals on children’s well-being. Notably, he has not made any accusations of misconduct against either company.

While Fruit of the Loom and Berkshire Hathaway have yet to respond to Reuters’ requests for comments, Montreal-based Gildan has affirmed its cooperation with the investigation. Gildan asserts its adherence to stringent manufacturing and sourcing standards aligned with industry guidelines to prevent the use of harmful chemicals in its products.

Following a $2.2 billion merger with HanesBrands Inc., Gildan is committed to delivering safe and high-quality goods to consumers. Paxton highlighted the shift towards synthetic materials like polyester and spandex by clothing manufacturers to meet the demand for affordable products. Research indicates that synthetic fabrics can release microplastics and that certain chemicals used in textile manufacturing, such as bisphenols and PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), have been linked to health issues like cancer and hormone disruption.

Paxton stressed the importance of safeguarding children from potential harm, especially considering their vulnerability. This investigation mirrors a previous probe by Paxton into Lululemon Athletica’s activewear for similar concerns regarding “forever chemicals.” As Paxton, a Republican candidate for a U.S. Senate seat, competes against Democrat James Talarico, the upcoming election is closely monitored as one of the pivotal races in the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
