Timpson, a renowned shoe repair chain, has introduced a new service for trading in mobile phones. Partnering with musicMagpie and AO, the company now allows individuals to bring their unwanted smartphones to Timpson stores for instant cash payment. Recent research indicates that a significant number of UK adults possess unused smartphones, collectively valued at around £10 billion. Despite various online options, Timpson aims to cater to customers who prefer in-person transactions, joining other similar high street services.
According to a survey, a majority of people prefer trading in their devices face-to-face, with immediate payment being crucial for many. Timpson and musicMagpie initiated a trial run of the trade-in service four months ago, and it is now available at over 1,300 Timpson locations nationwide. John Roberts, CEO of AO World, emphasized the convenience of the service, highlighting the ease and speed of receiving cash for old smartphones. This initiative is seen as just the beginning of a promising partnership between the two companies.
Steve Oliver, co-founder of musicMagpie, expressed excitement about expanding their reach through the collaboration with Timpson. Sid Hubbard, Timpson’s group director, emphasized the company’s commitment to providing excellent service, extending their longstanding tradition of repairing goods to include smartphone trade-ins. The collaboration aims to offer customers instant value for their old tech while promoting affordability and sustainability.
