The tragic death of a mother who passed away after receiving an unauthorized weight loss injection has brought to light the struggles that led her to seek such treatments. Karen McGonigal, a 53-year-old woman from Salford in Greater Manchester, died in May this year shortly after reportedly being administered with semaglutide, a drug for weight loss. Before her untimely demise, Karen was grappling with mental health issues and a strong desire to lose weight.

Her daughters, Abbie and Ffion McGonigal, revealed that Karen’s self-esteem took a hit after the end of a long-term relationship, leading her to believe that her weight was negatively impacting her life. In an interview with ITV News, Abbie shared insights into her mother’s struggles, expressing how Karen yearned to regain her confidence and former self.

Despite seeking assistance from her general practitioner, Karen was unsuccessful in obtaining Mounjaro, a potent anti-obesity medication, through the NHS due to strict eligibility criteria. Consequently, friends informed her about the availability of the drug at a local beauty salon, where a beautician allegedly offered the injections at a cost.

Karen frequented the salon for what she thought were legitimate treatments but tragically fell ill four days after her final injection, experiencing severe stomach pains and difficulty breathing. Rushed to the hospital, she never regained consciousness, and after a brief period in intensive care, her life support was eventually turned off.

Karen’s devastated daughters are now advocating for stricter regulations on the sale of unlicensed weight loss drugs, cautioning others against falling victim to illicit weight loss treatments. They are calling for more robust enforcement measures by authorities to prevent the distribution of unsafe medications, emphasizing the devastating impact such counterfeit drugs can have on individuals’ lives.

Following the investigation into Karen’s death, two individuals have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and the supply of controlled substances. The family awaits further test results to confirm their suspicions regarding the unregulated injections’ role in Karen’s passing. In the wake of this tragedy, they hope to raise awareness and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
