President Donald Trump has decided to halt all trade negotiations with Canada due to what he perceives as manipulative television advertisements. Trump accused Canada of engaging in “egregious behavior” by using fake ads featuring Ronald Reagan to influence US court decisions and oppose tariffs. The escalating trade tensions between the two countries have reached a critical point with Trump’s sudden termination of trade talks.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump, aged 79, claimed that Canada had fraudulently misused an advertisement featuring Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs, without permission. He emphasized the importance of tariffs for national security and the US economy, leading to his decision to terminate all trade negotiations with Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had previously expressed intentions to boost exports to countries outside the US in response to Trump’s tariff threats. However, Carney’s office has not yet responded to Trump’s latest action as the prime minister is currently attending a summit in Asia.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute criticized an Ontario government ad for distorting Reagan’s remarks on trade and stated that legal action is being considered. Despite Trump’s recent efforts to ease trade tensions during a meeting with Carney, the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement faces uncertainty as Trump has soured on the deal he negotiated in his first term.

Over three-quarters of Canadian exports are directed to the US, with billions of dollars worth of goods and services crossing the border daily. Trump’s decision to end trade negotiations came after he saw a Canadian ad criticizing his tariffs, prompting him to assert that the tariffs were effective.

In a separate post, Ontario Premier Doug Ford launched an advertising campaign against American tariffs, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the two countries for mutual prosperity.
