A man who unlawfully entered a residence in Rockford, Illinois, and stabbed an 11-year-old girl while she was asleep, later expressed remorse and pleaded for forgiveness during his sentencing. Ricardo Perez Castillo, a US Marine Corps recruiter, committed the violent act on June 15, 2024.
Castillo, aged 25, entered the home on Ella Terrace Court, armed with a knife, after removing his clothing. He proceeded to the children’s room where he attacked the girl, causing her severe injuries. Despite the victim describing the incident as terrifying, Castillo, now convicted, asked for her forgiveness, claiming a newfound connection to faith.
He faced charges of assault with intent to murder, first-degree home invasion, and second-degree assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct, as stated by the Kent County Prosecutor’s office. The judge sentenced Castillo to 40 years in prison, likening the crime to a horror movie.
According to Kent County chief assistant prosecutor Elizabeth Bartlett, Castillo initially aimed to fatally injure the girl by stabbing her in the neck, believing he was targeting her neck as she lay on an air mattress. The victim’s screams alerted her family, preventing further harm.
During police interviews, Castillo revealed his intention to harm the entire family, stating his belief that killing the girl by stabbing her neck was the easiest way. He also admitted to wanting to engage in disturbing acts after the girl’s death.
The victim, in her statement to the court, vividly recalled the pain and fear she experienced during the attack, emphasizing the trauma and injuries she sustained. Following his sentencing, Castillo expressed deep regret and sought forgiveness from the victims and the community, acknowledging his past mistakes and newfound faith.
