Three scientists, Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel, have been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their groundbreaking work on light-gated ion channels and optogenetics, announced by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. Optogenetics enables the precise control of individual nerve cell activity in the brain, revolutionizing neuroscience research globally.

The laureates, Deisseroth from the United States, Hegemann and Nagel from Germany, expressed their joy and honor at receiving the prestigious award together. Each scientist will receive a share of the 12 million Swedish crowns prize money. Deisseroth is affiliated with Stanford University, Hegemann with Humboldt University in Berlin, and Nagel with the University of Würzburg in Germany.

Optogenetics has opened new avenues in neuroscience, allowing researchers to delve into how the brain processes information and the interactions between neurons. Clinical trials have shown promising results in restoring vision to individuals with retinitis pigmentosa through the insertion of light-sensitive proteins in the retina. Additionally, optogenetics offers potential improvements for cochlear implants, enhancing auditory nerve stimulation accuracy.

The journey towards optogenetics began in the early 1990s when Hegemann and Nagel discovered channelrhodopsin-2, an ion channel activated by light. Deisseroth later demonstrated the technique’s efficacy in rat nerve cells, leading to the formalization of optogenetics in 2006.

The Nobel Prizes in Chemistry and Physics are set to be awarded in the coming days, followed by Literature and Peace prizes. The announcement of the Economics prize is scheduled for October 12. The prestigious Nobel Prize, established by Alfred Nobel, recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions benefiting humanity.

Alfred Nobel, renowned for inventing dynamite, was a multitalented individual proficient in several languages and literary pursuits. The Nobel prizes, honoring achievements in various fields, are presented to the laureates on December 10, commemorating Nobel’s legacy.
