On a scorching August afternoon, high-spirited racehorses prance and kick up the sand at Onion Lake Cree Nation’s Heritage Park, as onlookers gather near the white rail fence, eagerly anticipating the commencement of the Indian Relay Racing event. Organizer Candy Jackson expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic turnout and the impressive participation of 14 teams in the thrilling sport.

Indian Relay Racing, a team sport where riders compete by racing laps on a track and exchanging horses, demands skill and precision. The intense exchanges, marked by dismounting and swiftly transitioning to a new horse after touching the ground, can be pivotal in determining race outcomes.

Over the past decade, the sport has experienced a surge in popularity across the Prairies, with races becoming prominent summer attractions, attracting sizable audiences and offering substantial cash rewards. Tyson Head, a seasoned horse racer from Mistawasis, Saskatchewan, highlighted the growing interest in the sport, leading to increased sponsorships and a rise in the number of competing teams.

The sport’s expansion has paved the way for newcomers to learn from experienced teams, fostering a cycle of knowledge exchange and skill development. While the sport’s growth brings numerous benefits, Jackson emphasized the importance of preserving the sport’s cultural roots amidst its increasing commercialization.

Through traditional rituals like pipe ceremonies and prayers, organizers like Jackson strive to maintain the sport’s connection to indigenous culture. Riders, such as cousins Kyla and Kayden Stanley, underscored the significance of spiritual preparation before races, emphasizing the sport’s inherent risks and the need for a respectful and safe approach.

Beyond the thrill of competition and monetary rewards, the sport offers riders a chance to honor tradition, stay connected to their heritage, and draw strength from the spiritual bond between rider and horse. The enduring spirit of the sport lies in its ability to empower riders and celebrate the timeless bond between humans and horses.
