Virgin Media has shared some valuable tips to maintain optimal internet speeds throughout the year. Besides the common advice of placing the router centrally, rebooting it monthly, and avoiding signal interference like fish tanks, it’s crucial to consider the impact of changing weather conditions.

As temperatures increase in late spring and summer, routers may face additional strain, emphasizing the need to keep them in cool, well-ventilated areas.

Virgin Media highlighted the effects of warmer weather on broadband performance, stating, “Hot weather can stress broadband equipment, both indoors and outdoors.

“While external equipment can withstand high temperatures, indoor routers may struggle if exposed to excessive heat.

“Routers require proper airflow for optimal operation. If your router is tucked away behind furniture, stowed in a cupboard, positioned near a heater, or under direct sunlight, heat buildup, especially during a heatwave, can lead to slower speeds, dropped connections, or automatic restarts to cool down.”

To mitigate the impact of warm weather, ensure your router is placed in a cooler location. While high temperatures can affect performance, other weather conditions are less likely to disrupt your online activities.

Virgin Media advised, “Most weather-related broadband issues actually originate indoors.

“Factors such as thick walls, excessive connected devices, and poor router placement typically have a more significant daily impact on your connection than external weather conditions.”

For optimal Wi-Fi performance, consider placing your router in a central, open area away from direct sunlight. Additionally, avoid positioning the router behind large metal objects or furniture.

After severe weather events, it’s recommended to inspect and secure your cables to prevent damage. Furthermore, reducing interference by limiting the number of connected devices simultaneously can improve your connection stability.
