A young boy, Nathaniel Burton, bravely attempted to seek help as his mother, Sarah Safranek, made repeated attempts to end his life. Despite expressing his fears to both grandmothers, Nathaniel’s pleas went unheard as Safranek ultimately suffocated him to death at their residence. The tragic incident occurred on February 18, 2021, with Safranek later sentenced to 35 years in prison for first-degree murder.
Prior to his untimely demise, Nathaniel confided in his grandmother about his mother’s disturbing actions, including placing a pillow over his head while he slept. Court documents revealed that Nathaniel lived in constant fear, saying, “Mama is going to kill me,” and describing instances where his mother tried to drown him in a bathtub.
Despite warnings from Nathaniel and multiple visits from social services, Safranek’s harmful behavior towards her son continued unchecked. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) visited their home numerous times in the two years leading up to Nathaniel’s death, raising concerns about the lack of intervention.
In a chilling turn of events, it was disclosed that Safranek had made troubling internet searches before and after Nathaniel’s passing, including queries about cremation costs for a child and methods of causing harm with a voodoo doll. She also wrote in her journal about causing harm to her children, further highlighting the extent of her disturbing thoughts.
The court’s decision mandated that Safranek serve her full sentence of 35 years and follow it with three years of mandatory supervised release. Judge Anthony Peska emphasized the gravity of the crime by ordering the maximum penalty for the heinous act committed by Nathaniel’s mother.
