Brendan Rodgers abruptly left Celtic just before 10pm on Monday evening, causing chaos at Parkhead. Dermot Desmond, the club’s majority shareholder, issued a scathing statement as Rodgers made his exit.
Rodgers’ second tenure at Celtic concluded following a 3-1 defeat to Hearts, leaving the team eight points behind. Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney have taken temporary charge. A Celtic statement confirmed Rodgers’ resignation and mentioned the initiation of the process to appoint a new permanent manager.
Michel-Ange Balikwisha, a recent signing, indirectly expressed dissatisfaction with Rodgers on social media. Balikwisha, who struggled under Rodgers, posted and then removed an Instagram picture hinting at his feelings towards the departing manager.
Rodgers had criticized the board over the club’s summer transfer dealings, leading to fan unrest and calls for changes within the hierarchy. Desmond responded to Rodgers’ departure by labeling him as “divisive, misleading, and self-serving.”
