Shabana Mahmood is preparing to unveil a significant overhaul of the immigration regulations in the UK, drawing inspiration from Denmark’s policies. The Home Secretary has reportedly sent officials to Denmark to study their stringent border control and asylum measures, known for being some of the toughest in Europe.

Denmark’s strategies, such as tighter rules on family reunions and temporary stays for certain refugees, are under scrutiny. These approaches have led to a notable decrease in asylum applications to a four-decade low and a high success rate in removing 95% of rejected asylum seekers. There is a division among Labour MPs regarding the proposed changes, with some favoring stricter measures to counter Reform UK while others fear losing support to the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats.

Ms. Mahmood aims to deter unauthorized entry into the UK while streamlining the process of deporting individuals with no legal right to remain. It is reported that she is eager to meet with Rasmus Stoklund, Denmark’s immigration minister, to discuss potential collaboration.

Previously, Mr. Stoklund likened Danish society to the peaceful nature of the hobbits in “The Lord of the Rings,” emphasizing the expectation for positive contributions from those entering the country. Stoke-on-Trent Central Labour MP Gareth Snell expressed openness to exploring changes that enhance fairness in the asylum system, addressing constituents’ concerns. He highlighted the importance of learning from successful immigration management practices worldwide.

Conversely, Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome, a member of the party’s Socialist Campaign Group caucus, cautioned against adopting the Danish model, labeling it as aligned with far-right ideologies. She emphasized the need for the Labour government to distance itself from such policies.

Recent Home Office data revealed that 648 migrants arrived in the UK via the Channel on Friday, totaling 38,223 for the year. Stay informed by selecting Daily Mirror as a ‘Preferred Source’ on Google News for quick access to the latest news updates.
