Kent’s Reform council is facing turmoil, raising concerns about public safety, according to the Fire Brigades Union (FBU). Following Reform UK’s majority win in May on Kent County Council, nine councillors, including key fire authority members, have been suspended. This has left Kent’s fire and rescue service Chief Executive with limited spending authority due to the fire authority’s inability to function fully, prompting the FBU to deem the situation a threat to public safety. The FBU has criticized the council leader, Linden Kemkaran, labeling her as “captain chaos” and highlighting the lack of response to their requests for a meeting.

The FBU has expressed worries about the breakdown in governance within Kent, stressing the need for accountability to the public and elected representatives. The FBU officials have urged the council administration to take control of the situation. Joe Weir, representing the FBU in the South East, emphasized the importance of effective political leadership to support Kent firefighters in their crucial role of ensuring public safety.

Recently, a vital committee meeting in Kent was canceled due to the suspension of its chairperson, affecting important decisions impacting local families. With a substantial annual budget of £2.5bn, Kent County Council plays a significant role in the region. Requests for comments from Ms. Kemkaran were made but have not been responded to yet.
