Parents have shared insights into the toys that fail to capture their child’s interest, such as teddy bears and musical instruments. A survey of 1,000 parents with children aged two to 12 highlighted that items like shape sorters and car garages also struggle to maintain kids’ engagement. The study revealed that 73 percent of parents believe children today have shorter attention spans, with 18 percent stating their kids lose interest in an activity within less than 10 minutes.

To address dwindling attention spans, Yoto, a kids’ audio player company, has introduced gift bundles featuring extensive child-friendly audio content. They have also developed interactive audio cards with gaming elements and activities like drawing, baking, and yoga. Clinical psychologist Dr. Martha Deiros Collado, in collaboration with Yoto, shared nine tips to consider for Christmas present purchases to ensure lasting engagement.

Dr. Martha emphasized the importance of selecting toys that encourage problem-solving and real-world skills, as well as items that can be used on the go. The survey also found that 35 percent of parents carefully consider how long a toy will keep their child occupied before making a purchase. While 49 percent seek toys that foster creativity, 36 percent look for educational opportunities. Despite this, 60 percent of parents admitted buying items that did not pique their child’s interest, leading to dissatisfaction with the longevity of 58 percent of their purchases.

Interestingly, 69 percent of parents have bought toys specifically to enhance their child’s focus and attention span. Popular choices for this purpose include interactive storybooks, puzzles, and activity books. According to market research, 91 percent of parents stress the importance of Christmas gifts captivating their child’s imagination over an extended period. Additionally, 75 percent wish to understand how to help their child improve their attention span, with 97 percent valuing sparking imagination and creativity.

Recommendations from parents include encouraging questions from kids to maintain curiosity, celebrating imagination, and limiting screen time. Jess Tarrant, content director at Yoto, expressed the importance of thoughtful consideration in choosing gifts that promote engagement and development. Balancing creativity and longevity, parents aim to find toys that offer lasting value and can grow with their child.
