Keir Starmer has acknowledged a mistake in judgment to the ethics chief regarding the selection of the chairman of England’s football regulatory body.
Despite having previously refrained from involvement in such matters due to receiving hospitality from football clubs, the Prime Minister expressed approval of Labour donor David Kogan’s appointment after being informed through a note in April 2025.
This incident follows Lisa Nandy, the Culture Secretary, apologizing for breaching a code in connection to the same appointment, where she failed to disclose that Mr. Kogan had supported her leadership campaign.
In a recent statement, Mr. Starmer disclosed his previous declarations of hospitality from football associations, reiterating his decision to abstain from decisions related to the Football Governance Bill. However, he admitted to supporting Mr. Kogan’s appointment upon receiving a note from the Culture Secretary, a decision he now regrets.
Responding to the situation, Sir Laurie Magnus expressed disappointment that the Prime Minister got involved in the appointment despite earlier recusal but commended him for discussing the issue transparently. Sir Laurie emphasized the importance of stringent recusal management processes and welcomed the internal review initiated by Mr. Starmer to enhance standards in public life.
