Former US President Barack Obama has condemned violence in America following a shooting incident near the White House. In a social media post, Obama expressed prayers for the service members who were shot in Washington, DC, and extended sympathy to their families during the holiday season. The suspected shooter, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national who arrived in the US in 2021, has been linked to the incident.

Current US President Trump, from Florida where he was celebrating Thanksgiving, also responded to the attack, vowing that the perpetrator would face severe consequences for their actions. Trump praised the National Guard and law enforcement officers, expressing support and solidarity with them.

Authorities are investigating the shooting with no clear motive established yet. The two guards targeted in the attack are in critical condition in a hospital, as confirmed by FBI Director Kash Patel. The incident occurred close to the White House, with nearby troops managing to apprehend the gunman after he opened fire.

The presence of the National Guard in the capital has sparked debate over the administration’s use of military forces to address crime issues. Videos shared on social media showed first responders providing medical assistance to the wounded troops. The deployment of National Guard members has been a contentious issue, with recent legal actions challenging their continued presence.

Despite a federal judge’s order to end the deployment, the troops remained on duty. They have been involved in various activities, including patrolling neighborhoods, manning checkpoints, and assisting in public events. The situation remains under scrutiny as the authorities assess the ongoing need for National Guard support in the area.
