Giovanna and Tom Fletcher decided it was time for their 11-year-old son to have a phone as he started secondary school in September. They emphasized the importance of communication and setting boundaries to ensure his safety while using the device.
Acknowledging the challenges and benefits that come with children having smartphones, thousands of families are now navigating this new territory. To support families in this journey, a campaign called The Family Chat, in partnership with Tesco Mobile, has been launched. The campaign aims to encourage open conversations about online device usage within families, regardless of their children’s age.
Giovanna expressed her enthusiasm for the campaign, highlighting the valuable resources and tools provided by Tesco Mobile that help parents navigate online safety more effectively. With two other sons aged seven and nine who use tablets for communication and entertainment, Giovanna and Tom have implemented strict settings on their eldest son’s smartphone to limit its functionality and ensure his safety.
Giovanna emphasized the importance of maintaining an open dialogue with children about the reasons behind setting restrictions on devices. She also emphasized the need for parents to lead by example by limiting their own screen time and creating tech-free zones at home.
Offering practical tips for parents, such as setting up child accounts, using age-appropriate settings, activating safety filters, utilizing parental controls, and maintaining open communication about online activities, the campaign aims to empower families to create a safe digital environment for their children.
Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasized the significance of prioritizing the safe setup of new devices to protect children from online harm. By being proactive in implementing safety measures and fostering ongoing discussions about online usage, parents can help their children navigate the digital world responsibly.
