The family of a schoolgirl who was brutally raped and murdered by a 27-year-old woman claims that her father passed away due to overwhelming grief from the tragic events.
Shortly after being reported missing in October 2022, the lifeless body of 12-year-old Lola Daviet was discovered mutilated and crammed into a plastic container outside the Paris apartment building where she resided with her family.
Recently, Algerian-born Dahbia Benkired was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 30 years for the rape, torture, and murder of Lola. This ruling marks the first time in French legal history that a woman has received a whole-life term.
During the trial, it was revealed that Benkired likely carried out the heinous act as retaliation against the girl’s mother for refusing to provide her with a key to the premises.
Following Benkired’s arrest, a significant political dispute emerged in France when it came to light that she had unlawfully overstayed her student visa. Lola’s parents denounced any exploitation of their daughter’s name for political motives.
Tragically, Lola’s father, Johan Daviet, succumbed to grief at the age of 49. His widow, Delphine Daviet, testified in court that he turned to alcohol again after being devastated by their daughter’s death, ultimately passing away due to his sorrow.
Before his death, Mr. Daviet left a poignant note on Benkired’s door expressing his confusion and longing to see his beloved daughter again, signing it as “Your dad, who loves you for life.”
Lola’s brother, Thibault Daviet, spoke on behalf of the family in court, urging for truth and justice to prevail in their ordeal.
During the trial, CCTV footage revealed Benkired handling Lola’s body in a suitcase at a crowded Paris bar soon after the murder. The victim’s feet bore mysterious markings of ‘1’ and ‘0,’ with medical experts confirming she suffered 38 wounds before succumbing to asphyxiation.
As the court viewed images of Lola’s injuries, family members left in distress. Lola had endured visible trauma to her genitals, a severe facial wound, and head injuries.
On the day of the tragedy, Lola was last seen entering the apartment building and conversing with Benkired before being taken inside. Benkired allegedly transported Lola’s body across Paris in a plastic box before abandoning it, leading to its discovery by a passerby.
At the onset of the trial, Benkired sought forgiveness, acknowledging the horror of her actions and expressing remorse to Lola’s family. She was ultimately sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
