Ronnie O’Sullivan, a snooker legend, has made history by achieving the highest break ever seen in a professional snooker match with a remarkable 153 against Ryan Day.
Competing in the World Open tournament in Yushan, China, O’Sullivan showcased exceptional form, defeating Matthew Selt and Shaun Murphy to secure a spot in the quarter-final against Day. In a dazzling performance, known as ‘The Rocket,’ O’Sullivan set a new record by scoring 153 in the opening frame, surpassing the previous record of 148 held by Jamie Burnett.
During the game, the 50-year-old executed a flawless 16-red clearance after being granted a free ball, enabling him to clear the table efficiently. O’Sullivan began his break by potting the green as the 16th red, displaying impeccable skill and precision throughout the sequence.
Despite a moment of slight deviation in one shot, O’Sullivan managed to maintain his composure and continued his break, ultimately potting the black to reach the historic 153 mark. Day, while losing the frame, acknowledged O’Sullivan’s remarkable achievement with applause, leaving spectators in awe.
Former professional player Neal Foulds, in the commentary box, expressed his amazement at O’Sullivan’s feat, describing it as “mindblowing.” This record-breaking performance by O’Sullivan surpasses Burnett’s previous record set in 2004.
Although the current season has been challenging for O’Sullivan, he now stands on the brink of reaching the semi-final at the World Open, leading 4-0 against world No.36 Day.
