Victor Lai of Canada secured the bronze medal in the men’s singles category at the badminton world championships on Saturday. The 21-year-old athlete from Markham, Ontario, who was seeded seventh, faced a tough battle in the semifinals against European champion Alex Lanier of France. Despite losing 16-21, 21-13, 21-14, Lai managed to clinch the bronze medal as one of the semifinalists who did not progress to the final round.
Last year, Lai made history by winning Canada’s first-ever medal at the badminton world championships when he defeated 2021 world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in the quarterfinals in Paris. This year, he once again showcased his skill by defeating Loh in the round of 16 and then overcoming Rasmus Gemke of Denmark in the quarterfinals to secure his second world championship medal.
Lai’s impressive performance has elevated his ranking from 50th to seventh in the world over the past year, demonstrating his continuous improvement and dedication to the sport.
